“Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun cause more than 90 percent of the visible signs of aging, which include wrinkles, rough patches, sagging, and skin discoloration” (Source: SkinCancer.org). After 40 plus years of the sun exposure you thought you were getting to just maintain your tan start appearing in the form of dark spots and uneven tone. The bags under your eyes aren’t remedied by a good night’s sleep like it used to be in your 30’s and 20’s.
Most think that the more anti-aging products they use, the more their skin will improve. Follow a simple skin care routine consisting of just two or three good facial products.
The Basics:
Cleanser
Cleanse your face with a creamy/milky cleanser both in the morning and at night. Make sure the cleanser you choose is gentle on the face, so that you don’t damage or irritate your skin. If you suffer from hormonal fluctuations and experience pimples or acne, then choose a gentle cleanser and/or acne pads that contains salicylic acid. Salicylic acid has been shown to be even more effective in reducing acne legions than the most common acne treatments (Source: NCBI ).

Moisturizer and Serum
Find a serum high in antioxidants that will fight free radicals and damage from sun exposure, like Vitamin C that may help prevent and treat ultraviolet (UV)-induced photodamage as well as enhance collagen and elastin production (Source: OSU ). Continue to apply a broad-spectrum moisturizer with SPF 30 over the serum.
Nighttime Treatment
You should consider using a moisture rich cream at night since in your 40’s you may experience a sudden lack of moisture in your skin. More importantly, creams with retinoids boost collagen and elastin production, which will prevent future sagging (Source: NCBI). Retinoids are also used to treat acne, so if you are suffering from premenopausal acne (Source: AOCD), then you will be killing two birds with one stone!
