Does Stress Cause Aging Skin?

A good anti-aging skin care program does not only include the use of anti-aging creams or serums but also includes relaxation techniques to avoid/cope with stress and to maintain a positive attitude and outlook on life.

Time Management. There is not enough time in the day to accomplish everything we must get done, but since technology has not yet advanced in a way to create more time, then the most efficient way to decrease daily stress is to manage your time properly. Create reasonable to-do lists each day, prioritizing what is most important. Try to minimize all distractions, including social media, texting, and email in order to have a clear mindset. Make a reasonable timeline for both short term and long term goals, jotting down every step that needs to be taken in order to further reach your goal. Stress is eliminated by organizing and planning your time wisely.

Positive Attitude. Your mind creates your reality and the more you keep thinking negative thoughts, the greater the chances are that they will manifest in your world. You must maintain a positive outlook on life in order to live a fulfilling, happy, and successful life. This is where the glass half-full/half-empty analogy comes in—always focus your mind on the full half rather than the empty half. Rather than letting what you don’t have stress you out, focus on the good things you already have in your life. In any stressful situation, substitute your negative thoughts with positive ones telling yourself “I can”, “I am able”, and “I can do it”. Not only will you be mentally healthy, but thinking positively will show on your physical health as well.

Meditation. If stressful situations are making you anxious and tense, consider trying meditation. Meditation gives you a sense of calm by focusing your attention and eliminating all the cluttered thoughts that may be crowding your mind and causing stress. You will be able to improve both your physical and emotional well-being since meditation is considered a mind-body relaxation technique. With practice, you will be able to carry on more calmly and peacefully throughout your day.

Reduce Caffeine Intake. Consuming too much caffeine throughout the day not only increases physiological arousal, but can affect your sleep quality and keep you awake at night, impacting stress levels. Caffeine can also make you more emotionally reactive to stress, so try and reduce your caffeine intake to avoid the effects of aging caused by increased stress levels.

Listen to Music. If you’re overwhelmed with worry and stress, take a break and listen to relaxing classical music or some kind of nature sounds like the ocean waves. Music is a great way to give your mind a temporary break from all stressful situations.
