Everyone likes the idea of being unique and what better way to dress uniquely than to design your own outfits? A lot of people do not prefer wearing off the rack or prêt wear anymore as it gets very common.
The following steps can be taken to easily create an outfit:
Research
The first thing to do is to thoroughly research what is in fashion and what is not. This will give you an idea of what colors, cuts and designs are being worn that season and make it easier for you to narrow down your options of the kind of outfit you want.
Pick a Color
The second step while designing your own dress is to pick the color of your choice. Some colors may suit you more than others or a particular color may be your favorite. Decide on the color you want and stick to it.
Pick a Cut
It’s all about the cut nowadays. Everything is in fashion as long as you know how to carry it. Some cuts suit a particular body type more than others. For example, a nice flowy cut would help hide the few extra pounds you have gained over winter.
Pick the Material
The material you pick for your outfit is very important. You must know the flow, fall and feel of materials in order to match the design to the material. All cuts don’t come out nice in all materials. You must find the right match. For example, if you are going for a flowy shirt, a stiff material like cotton just wouldn’t do. For that flowy cut, you would need a material like georgette or chiffon or linen.
Accessorize
Don’t forget to choose embellishments to bling up your outfit like some fancy lace or buttons or even a contrasting scarf. These can make the difference between ordinary and extraordinary.
Sketch the Design
Once you have an image of your outfit in your head, make sure to draw it to see what it would look like when drawn together. There are software easily available online if you don’t want to use the old paper and pencil. The software will help you create illustrations and chalk out the measurements, etc.
Stitch to Perfection
In order to get exactly what you want, you need to be hands on with the stitching. If you own your own sewing machine and know how to work it, nothing like it. Otherwise, these machines are available for use at alteration shops or fabric shops and you can rent one out to create your dream dress.
You can always take inspiration from an outfit you saw somewhere in a magazine, on television or internet. Always tweak the design according to your taste and body type. We would like to stress again that all cuts and colors do not suit everyone. The best part about designing one’s own outfit is that it is perfect, just for you.
